World's first TRI-Line operational in Hoch-Ybrig

Hoch-Ybrig

The new Weglosen–Seebli cable car in Hoch-Ybrig (CHE) is a world first: the first cable car to feature the innovative ‘TRI-Line’ cable car system. Its standout features include state-of-the-art technology, a newly developed running gear, a barrier-free cabin and the option of autonomous operation.

The TRI-Line Weglosen–Seebli in the Swiss ski and hiking area of Hoch-Ybrig replaces a reversible aerial tramway dating from 1970. Due to the topographical and geological requirements in the area, Hoch-Ybrig AG decided together with Garaventa to implement the world's first TRI-Line.
TRI-Line is a new ropeway system developed by Doppelmayr in Wolfurt and is a further development of three-cable technology. It combines the advantages of powerful 3S technology with those of the proven D-Line generation and impresses with its compact stations and towers.
Only two towers are used on the approximately 1.7-kilometre-long route. Each consists of two round tube towers, which reduces the space required and allows the system to blend harmoniously into the landscape.
The new ropeway was built slightly offset from the previous axis, so construction work on the new system could begin while the aerial tramway continued to transport guests to the skiing and hiking area.

TRI-Line in Hoch-Ybrig

Urs Keller, Managing Director of Hoch-Ybrig AG, says, “The TRI-Line Hoch-Ybrig project is a generational project – for us and for the entire region. The feeder railway is the first thing our guests see in the morning and the last thing they see before they go home. With the new railway, we are creating something that will leave a lasting impression for decades to come. In future, the new TRI-Line will provide reliable, comfortable and barrier-free access to the area – all year round.”

Designed for autonomous operation

The new TRI-Line in Hoch-Ybrig is AURO-compatible. AURO stands for Autonomous Ropeway Operation and enables operation without operating personnel. Depending on requirements, the system can be operated in two modes:

  • In conventional operation, employees monitor the valley and mountain stations, enabling full transport capacity – ideal for peak traffic in the ski resort.
  • In AURO operation, passengers board and alight from stationary cabins via portals. Operation is monitored by video and controlled centrally via the Ropeway Operation Centre (ROC) at the mountain station. The system automatically detects deviations and slows down or stops operation if necessary. If the system comes to a standstill, the operator manually resumes operation at the mountain station after rectifying the cause. The operator can switch flexibly between the different operating modes and make optimum use of their resources.

TRI-Line drive

At the heart of the TRI-Line is its newly developed drive: two D5000 grips grip the cable from above, while eight rollers – four on each suspension cable – ensure smooth running and stability, even in strong winds. The cable car uses numerous proven components from the D-Line and the 3S system, which simplifies maintenance and operation for the cable car operating team.

TRI-Line cabin

CWA developed a completely new cabin, the bright red ‘STELLA’. In the initial phase, 18 cabins will transport up to 1,400 people per hour and direction. The journey time is around seven minutes.
The cabins can accommodate 18 people (12 seats and 6 standing places) and have an internal ski rack. Large panoramic windows offer unobstructed views of the impressive mountain landscape, while the level entrance provides barrier-free access. The lift also has an additional vehicle for transporting goods and a maintenance vehicle. The parking system for the cabins is integrated into the valley station.

Control of the TRI-Line

The electrical equipment is based on the Connect control system, a modern ropeway control system that is consistently geared towards the tasks of the operating personnel and enables efficient, intuitive system operation.
